What It Means to Update Your Device GPS updates are important for a simple reason: Maps change. If you don't regularly update your Nextar GPS system, it might present you with directions based on an outdated map, which could easily lead you astray. So if you're still using a Nextar GPS, be sure to update it consistently so that its maps are current and navigation directions are correct. Unfortunately, you usually have to pay money for updates to your Nextar GPS system. Here's how the process works. Nextar Devices From 2010 and Later Have a peak at the box your GPS came in to determine its exact model, as you'll need this information to update the system's maps.

Then take it to a Windows computer and head to the Naviextras.com website, entering it as a guest user. When the site's home page opens, look for a list of links inside the button on the right-hand side of the screen that reads, 'Have any questions or need help?' Click the second link, which should say, 'Is my device type supported?' This will redirect you to a list of devices supported by this update method. Scroll down to the 'Nextar' list and see if your device is on there. If so, you can purchase maps updates from Naviextras. If Naviextras supports your Nextar GPS device, return to the website's home page and click on the 'Download PC Tool' link.

This takes you to the website's downloads page, where you can download the Naviextras toolbox. This application only works with Windows PCs.

Connect your Nextar GPS to your computer using a USB data cable. The Naviextras toolbox software prompts you to register your device, which allows you to use the software to update your GPS system. At this point, it's time to again return to the Naviextras home page, where you'll click on 'Buy Updates or Extras' at the bottom-left side of the screen, and then 'Click here.' You should be redirected to a catalog of maps available for you to purchase and download onto your Nextar GPS. Choose which maps you'd like to use, and purchase and download them. You can then transfer those map files to your Nextar device, which should still be connected to your PC via USB cable, via the Naviextras toolbox software. Pre-2010 Nextar GPS Devices If you're still holding onto a Nextar device from the turn of the century, you might have to settle for investing in a replacement.

You can only update one of these systems by replacing its removable, non-rewritable SD card with a new one containing updated maps. These days, it's tough to find such an SD card, so unless you can find a dealer to provide you with a compatible SD card with updated maps for your old Nextar device, it might be time to buy a new GPS device.

Unless you know how to replace the on button, I don't think there is much you can do. You need some skills, to open electronic devices, in a way you can put it back together in one piece. Could be a spring in the switch is broken or the contacts are defect. But you have to open it to see what is wrong, so you can replace the defective part. Be aware it can be difficult yo get spare parts.

Don't know what a new one with brand new maps will cost, but there are great (cheap) ones on the market now. Patch for windows xp sp2. Check that too. Success.
